Caledonia Cyclocross

Steve and I (Shawn D.) decided to head down to Caledonia for Kisscross race # 6 on Sunday. Weather was nice, with the ground just soft enough to make things a little interesting.

After back to back DNF's due to blown out wheels in the last two CX races, I decided to make sure I would at least finish and opted for my mountain bike. The Caledonia race has been pretty mountain bike friendly in the past, so I felt ok about my choice. The A's were set to do 7 laps. GO! I got a pretty good start sitting in 3rd wheel coming into the first set of barriers. Moved up to second by the time we got through them. I had a slight bobble on a gravel patch that crossed the field right before the run up. This kicked me back to about 7th at the bottom of the hill. By the time I got to the top of the short run up, I was in 4th and back with the leaders. Ben Whitehead jumped and I went with him. This drew out Terry Sensiba and Earl Hillaker, and the four of us broke away.

On Lap two I went to the front and we lost Ben. (It should be noted that he was dressed as Kermit the Frog, and that couldn't have been comfortable to race in). Now it was down to Terry, Earl, and I. We tried making a few moves on each other, but there was no real place to get away.
Finally on the last lap w/ Earl at the front we were able to unhinge Terry. Now it was down to two. With about a 1/3 of a lap to go I took a hard dig around Earl up a slight incline, but into a block head wind. I got a gap, but was running out of gas quickly. Thinking that I may have just screwed myself, I decided to sit up and recover and try to take it from the front on the last climb onto the pavement and then sprint for my life. It worked, and I ended up with my first CX win!

Steve put in a solid effort and finished strong. We had a few beers after and called it a day. Next up is Iceman. See you all there!
